Phyllis Langhorne by John Singer Sargent.

Charcoal drawing from 1910. Copyright owner: JSS Gallery at: www.jssgallery.org/Paintings/Mugs/Phyllis_Langhorne.htm. This is an early painting of Phyllis Langhorne, who later married Robert (later Lord) Brand in 1917. They had three children, Virginia, Dinah and James. She lived from 1928 until her death in 1937 at Eydon Hall.

One of her four famous sisters was England's first lady MP, Lady Nancy Astor (see KL164). Mrs Brand threw herself into village life and was much loved by everyone. After Lucy Edwards' children went to school, she returned to her earlier job as a maid, this time at Eydon Hall, by then home to Robert and Phyllis Brand and their three children. She was later a ladies maid for Mrs Brand. Mrs Brand give Lucy Edwards a dolls house for her daughter Kath, who was around eight years old at the time, to play with (see KL245).
