A group of navvies armed with sledgehammers and picks posing for the cameraman while having a rest from digging a cutting near Woodford for the Great Central Railway in the mid 1890s.

The influx of workers building the railway caused Phipps Brewery of Northampton to buy Eydon’s shop and bakehouse so that it’s ales could be sold – navvies had a tough life and enjoyed hard living. It was thirsty work.
