Portrait of John Bishop by the side of a show stall selling Pettifer's animal medicines. John worked for the Pettifers who manufactured animal medicines in the village, growing many of the herbs needed in the fields nearby. Although not all - some of them contained bought ingredients such as extracts of rough shag tobacco and opium which some of the rougher workforce were rumoured to have indulged in. There is a picture of their Herb House in this archive.

John worked as a salesman and it is in this capacity that he is seen at some country show, besides placard advertising Pettifer's Green Oils and Herbal Tonics. As John died in 1945, this photo will have been taken in the late 1930s, early 40s. Photographer: Unknown
